>> breaking news -- a boat crashed in maryland sends a number of pe >> live and in hd, this is abc 7 breaking news. captioned by the national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org-- >> pasadena, maryland -- acting on the water turned dangerous. two boats collide injuring nine people and sending rescue crews

scrambling. among the people injured were a number of children. this happened at 8:00 tonight. it was off of grand view road in pasadena. investigators are trying to figure out what happened. tom roussey joins us live from pasadena. bring us up-to-date. >> this accident happened around 7:00 in the river, a few hundred feet behind me here. nearly 10 people were involved. the majority of them had to be taken to area hospitals including 15-year-old girl who we are told is in serious condition with potentially life- threatening injuries. we have confirmed that this man was in one of the boats. he is a state delegate, donald dwyer, who lives in this neighborhood. he was in one of the two boats that collided with each other. >> nicholas is his name -- they said, he was in a boating accident. >> she was one of many to rush

to the scene. her stepson was one of nine people involved and one of seven people taken to area hospitals. witnesses say this boat and it is were headed in opposite directions. >> i am thinking why is nobody slowing down? the next thing you know, they are approaching each other in front of a channel marker. they both collide. >> allen and a friend and immediately came out to try to rescue those involved. >> two children had blood on their faces and arms. a little scary to see. >> although coast guards and a fire rescuers came later authorities say it was local boaters who wrested the victims of the seven -- who rescued the victims. of those taken to hospitals, for adults. neighbors say boating accidents are rare, so this was a shocker. >> for the most part it is peaceful rancher. >> -- are around here.

>> -- republican delegate don dwyer is one of those involved. a spokesperson says he was taken to shock trauma. they say the delegate is banged up but seems to be ok. of the seven people taken to local hospitals, six have not life threatening injuries. that 15-year-old girl is in serious condition -- the 5-year- old girl is in serious condition according to the fire department. >> thank you very much. also, all eyes are on that storm the tropical storm appears to mean business. hundreds of thousands of people are in its path and are now a -- preparing for the worse. through caribbean -- the caribbean into florida, people are stocking up on supplies. officials are telling people to be better safe than sorry. there is the republican convention -- it is it stays on

engineer in training. maine's record of being checked for a possible cause. the man police say shot a security guard in a downtown d.c. has been indicted. 28-year-old floyd corkins has been charged with assault and -- with intent to kill, as well as gun charges. prosecutors say he walked into the headquarters and shot a guard in the arm. he will be arraigned on friday. the former president of penn state is speaking out about the jerry sandusky scandal. this is his first interview since stepping down as the school's president. he told abc news that the scandal caught him by surprise. >> never in my time at penn state did i ever, ever once received a report from anyone that suggested that jerry sandusky was involved in a child abuse and sexual abuse in any

it's a rough day out on the campaign trail. it seems the hecklers were out today. neither president obama nor mitt romney were a meehan. -- immune. the first incident happens during a rally for president obama in las vegas. the focus was on education, but apparently the man who disrupted

the cdc says 1100 cases have been reported this summer. 41 victims have died. it has people across the country and in our area worried. exterminators are working overseas -- over time. jay korff is live in fairfax. >> we are on a site in fairfax county where county health officials track and study mosquitos to see if they have west nile virus. national health officials believe we may be in the worst outbreak of west nile virus. >> after asian tiger mosquitoes -- >> his mind-set is simple. >> i look at a backyard and cec. -- >> he is on a mission to rid properties of the dreaded mosquito, a past that can endanger our health. >> miskitos have blossomed this past few weeks here. >> the centers for disease

control released a startling jump in the number of confirmed cases of west nile virus. there have only been a handful of cases in the washington d.c. region, but more than 1100 people have fallen ill and 41 have died in 2012 from a virus transmitted by mosquitoes. >> i feel i am getting eaten alive by mosquitos every time i am here. >> we went to one of the worst places -- dusk at the dog park near four mile run. >> we have a striking number of mosquitos. >> the encouraging news is that most mosquito bites will never lead to enormous, and a good number of cases it started far from here. back in alexandria, george schultze is concerned despite his best efforts. more cases may crop up in the coming weeks. >> it might be early to start reporting cases -- i suspect later in the month we will see pockets of the. >> experts say the 5 d's are

it's there was a big celebration today for a dc legend the godfather of go-go. it would have been chuck brown's 76 birthday. mayor vincent gray unveiled a proposal for chuck brown park. brown died in may. the proposed park would include part of the current langdon park, not far from the old gogo clubs of northeast. he also proclaimed today and all august 22 going forward to be chuck brown day. ll cool j found himself in a

real-life crime drama. he was face to face with a burglar in his home in los angeles. the suspect set off an alarm. ll cool j subdued him until police arrived. no word yet on charges.
